Plato represented the soul's transition from the sensible world to that of immutable and eternal Ideas with the image of a cave, where, as he explains in the Republic, there are imprisoned men who only see shadows of the ideal and luminous Reality of the outside. It is possible to ascend to this higher dimension when, with the practice of philosophy, one manages to leave behind the burden of matter. Seduced by this allegory, many artists and writers have adapted it over time to different sensibilities, to the point of creating an authentic tradition.
This volume takes a tour of works by contemporary authors who deal with this topic —from Josep Palau i Fabre and Rodolf Sirera to José Saramago, Oscar Wilde, Alberto Moravia and Luis Cernuda, among others— and shows how in cinema, the art of shadows and the moving image, clear and very suggestive parallels can be established with the famous myth of the Plato's cave.
